A GSTIN is 15 characters, and each part means something:
- 1–2 — State code (e.g. 27 = Maharashtra)
- 3–12 — The PAN of the business
- 13 — Entity number for that PAN in that state
- 14 — Always the letter Z
- 15 — A checksum digit calculated from the first 14
Most "validators" only check the length and pattern. This one also computes the checksum, which is what catches a mistyped or invented GSTIN.
Important limitation
A structurally valid GSTIN can still be cancelled or inactive. This tool proves the number is well-formed, not that the business is currently registered. For live registration status, check the official GST portal.
